iCenter: Camp Staff Training Seminar

iCenter: Camp Staff Training Seminar

The iCenter works to advance high-quality, meaningful and innovative Israel education by serving as the national hub and catalyst for building, shaping and supporting the field.

Its core strategies include cultivation of educators, development of educational resources, and advancing the field of Israeli education.

In 2015, with support from Genesis Philanthropy Group, iCenter organized an intensive weekend-long camp staff training for three Russian-speaking Jewish specialty camps: Camp Gesher at Kibbutz Max Straus (Glendale, CA), J.Academy Camp (Haliburton, ON, Canada), and Camp Havurah at CYJ Tel Yehuda (Barryville, NY). The three camps are all identity based, educational overnight summer camps that meet the specific needs of the RSJ communities through unique and tailor made programs. The RSJ staff in the camps undergo a very extensive screening and training process in order to take on the roles of Jewish camp counselors. This in-depth training helped shape the counselors’ identity, provided them with necessary skills, and prepared them for the summer sessions.

Financial support for these programs is provided by Genesis Philanthropy Group in partnership with the Jewish Agency for Israel and participating camps.

Goals and Objectives

  • Participants will deepen their knowledge to apply it in their work focusing on the RSJ cultural heritage, history, and identity.
  • Participants will learn individual camp format models and further develop their roles as counselors.
  • Participants will be exposed and learn to utilize new tools and materials to incorporate experiential Jewish and Israel education in the planning and implementing of group/camp-wide activities.
  • A three-camp community will be created that will share ideas and empower each other throughout the year.
