International Conference on Informal Education in Israel

International Conference on Informal Education in Israel

  • Grant period: 2012
In 2012, Israel hosted the first International conference for informal Jewish education professionals from the Russian-speaking Jewish community.

The conference brought together 200 professionals who have a significant influence on Jewish informal education in Russian-speaking communities through their ideas, initiatives and educational models.

The conference gave participants an opportunity:

  • to discuss topics specific to Jewish education;
  • to attend presentations by experts in informal Jewish education;
  • to present their own educational models and shared experience;
  • to network with colleagues from Jewish communities around the world.

The program included educational tours of Israel developed specifically for conference participants. A comprehensive retrospective of the Shoah of Soviet Jewry, developed with the participation of the Yad Vashem Memorial Complex, included a tour of Yad Vashem and presentations on the latest research on the subject. The conference was supported by Genesis Philanthropy Group and the Jewish Agency for Israel.

Goals and Objectives

  • Establish a framework for effective professional networking for informal Jewish educators working in Russian-speaking Jewish communities of the FSU, North America, Germany and Israel.
  • Create opportunities for sharing experience on issues concerning Jewish education in Russian.
  • Introduce informal Jewish educators to new methods and approaches.
