Volyn School Break

Volyn School Break

In 2012, Genesis Philanthropy Group supported the Volyn School Break project which offers thematic guided tours in the Volyn province of Ukraine.

Through 2012, three-day tours of the cities of Rovno, Ostrog, Lutsk and Kovel were offered to young adults and families from local Jewish communities. Participants study the history of Jewish Volyn' and visit historical and architectural memorials. At the end of the tour, participants compile a map and a guide book, using materials and information they received during the tour.

This grant is a part of Grassroots annual competition, organized by Genesis Philanthropy Group and UJA-Federation of New York. The goal of the competition is to discover and support the best local initiatives aimed at the revival of Jewish identity, the preservation of cultural and historical heritage and the development of socially active Jewish communities.

Goals and Objectives

  • Attract the interest of community members and wider audiences to the Jewish heritage of the Volyn' province.
  • Explore the Jewish tourism potential of Volyn.
  • Compile and organize materials collected during the tour in order to then disseminate information to Jewish communities in Ukraine and other FSU countries.
