Jewish Book Festival

Jewish Book Festival

In 2011, Genesis Philanthropy Group supported the annual Jewish Book Festival organized by the Jewish Community Center of St. Petersburg, which, for the first time, included special events for children. The following activities were supported:

  • An exhibit and book sale of contemporary Russian-language editions of Jewish books;
  • An exhibition of rare publications dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Babi Yar massacre;
  • Meetings with well-known authors and community leaders from Russia and Israel.

A number of activities were organized specifically for children, including trivia games, sessions with a Jewish children's writer, and a puppet show (staged by an organization that won the Grassroots competition).

The festival took place on November 13th and 14th 2011. It was supported jointly by GPG and the St. Petersburg Branch of the Russian Jewish Congress.

This grant is a part of Grassroots annual competition, organized by Genesis Philanthropy Group and UJA-Federation of New York. The goal of the competition is to discover and support the best local initiatives aimed at the revival of Jewish identity, the preservation of cultural and historical heritage and the development of socially active Jewish communities.

Goals and Objectives

  • Give residents of St. Petersburg an opportunity to learn about a wide range of contemporary Jewish publications in the Russian language.
  • Organize a series of cultural events that showcase the richness of the Jewish cultural heritage as well as the contemporary state of Jewish culture in Russia and other FSU countries.
  • Enrich the festival's program and make it attractive for diverse age groups, including children and youth.
